Why I Became a Virtual Assistant
Helping others has always been my passion. I have helped several small businesses with their admin work and loved being able to help them grow their business while they focused their time and skills where they were needed most.
When my first daughter was born 17 years ago, the urge to stay at home with her collided with the previous 7 years of my career. Subsequently, I have always been able to find a way to work from home. However at age 11, my daughter was diagnosed with brain cancer and after this life changing diagnosis I knew I never wanted to work for someone else. I needed the flexibility to make my own hours,to be my boss and not report to someone that told me when I had to be at work!
For the first time in my career I looked at what I love to do and what brought me the most joy. I was working remotely for a non-profit as their Executive Assistant. I thought to myself, “Why don’t I start my own business and do this for multiple companies”? The thought of starting my own business was scary and I was unsure how my family would react. I kept the idea to myself for a while and then got up the nerve to propose it to my family. Everyone was on board and supportive of the idea. After much thought and a year of prayer I knew it was time.
I began researching “Virtual Assistants”. I had no idea it was a “Thing” and uncovered a need that I could fill! I joined various online groups and quickly realized any additional information l would need regarding this venture was right there in front of me. My main questions at this point were…... Who would I serve? What would I offer? I knew I wanted to serve small businesses and more specifically the Equine Industry. We live on a small farm and horses have been our life ever since my oldest daughter started riding at four, followed by her little sister. I knew the importance of the Equestrian life so it only felt natural to serve that industry. Offering services to give them their time back while I helped them organize behind the scenes was what I would focus on. Is the Equine Industry the only one I serve? No, but it’s where my heart is.
Fast forward to a year later... I launched Doss Virtual Solutions! With a handful of clients, many hours of hard work and maybe a few tears I am happy to say my business is still growing and thriving! The return on my dream of being there for my family and growing my own business have been immeasurable. I’ve never regretted taking this journey.
